Two Thrifted Things, 4 at a Time HST's, Free Bird Pattern and Liberty's Too from Canadian Needle Nana

Spring is trumping winter-at last- as I write this. I saw our first robin on Sunday last. And the little chipmunk has emerged from the underground winter den, the one I imagine lined with my sunflower seeds.

Just after the snowstorm this guy below appeared acting like this, a sure sign of spring. The flock of females that were with him had wandered off but he hung about showing off, just because he can, I guess. I'm curious about the mechanics of this- being able to lift all these feathers and change certain body bits to different and bright ...

Feelings, Stitching Progress, New and Fun YouTube Channel from Canadian Needle Nana

March, someone said, is the triumph of hope over experience...not unlike second marriages as somebody else said. So here we are cruising along through the month and I'm going to ignore the major snow and ice storm warning we have on the horizon. Perhaps it will not materialize; they've gotten these predictions wrong before. However, just to be on the safe side, I've filled both tubs in case we lose the power.

The way down through the big woods path has opened up and I've been taking Ned there adding a further loop to our ...

Two Quilt Patterns I Won't Be Making Right Now -But Would Love To from Canadian Needle Nana

We had a fresh 2 cm of snow overnight Monday. In the morning it was -2 with a windchill of -11C but it didn't feel as cold as that when I went about my chores of filling the bird feeders and putting out the garbage. This morning it is the exact same wind chill so we'll see how that "feels" when I go out in a little bit. Our annual spring problem is the snow off the roof fills in our front walkway and we never get direct sunlight in this area to help speed up the melting ...

Stitchy Gift, Applique Projects, Free Patterns, Update from Canadian Needle Nana

The ground is starting to get that in between seasons look...grimy snowbanks and patches of old grass showing through here and there. Freezing temps overnight still and it was -14C here yesterday morning for a windy walk with Ned. They keep promising warm ups that don't happen. I gave my Geranium a deep trim-all my plants are getting a little "leggy" as they reach for the precious light. You can glimpse our snow free gravel driveway here so the sun is working it's magic even if the air is cold. Yah!

We went to Robbie's last ...

Sorrento from Quarter-Inch Capers

Sorrento is a free pattern from Robert Kaufman.

This one popped up in my Pinterest feed, and I liked it enough to download it and read through the directions. It is fat-quarter friendly. Find the pattern here.

Videos, Norma's Baskets, Best Free Pattern, Birds are Back from Canadian Needle Nana

The trails are providing all the workout I need these days. With melting and overnight freezing (-15 windchill -glad I wasn't out there), they are slushy, bumpy and narrow in places. Like walking a tightrope which is good for my balance. But I've had to take a ski pole along as I really don't want to turn an ankle. On the up side, the slightly warmer daytime temps mean less clothing is needed which is enjoyable. And surprise, surprise, the song birds are singing. Last Saturday, early morning, when I was gathering wood at the back basement ...

Stars To Hexagons, Barbara's Free Bird Patterns, Companions on the Journey from Canadian Needle Nana

I've just made myself a nice decaf coffee with frothed milk made from sweetened almond milk. I think of this as a tiny treat- this time after picking up a load of sticks to use as fire starters while walking Ned. Toting the bag and with Ned on the leash made the going a little rougher especially as our trails are still not flattened. A good little workout though. The cute appliqued bear placemats were found at the thrift store, still in their original ( I thought) box, which was quite crushed, but they were completely unharmed. Finding such makes ...

Beautiful Free Patterns, Valentine's Gifts, Slow Stitching Projects from Canadian Needle Nana

I'll speak of weather and get it out of the way as it were. We got advance warning of a winter storm so I was able to fill the feeders, get in my bit of firewood to start the fire and have an extra long walk in the evening thinking I wouldn't get out the next morning.

When I got up at 7, everything was calm, snow gently falling. Quite a bit of accumulation, around 30 cm by then, so the snowplows had their work cut out for them...So Ned and I tried out the trails. It ...

Free Pattern from Quarter-Inch Capers

I haven’t posted a free pattern in a long time…..I have mostly been using patterns I have, or doing BOM’s. Anyway, I saw this one recently, and I really like it.

It’s called Agatha’s Garden. The pattern is on the Andover website. You can go directly to it here. It really looks more complicated than it is. It would be quite easy to cut and sew, and it’s fairly big at 74” x 74”. I think it would be a great way to use a fat quarter collection that has an equal number of ...

Two Slow Stitch Projects, Plant Booster Juice, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

I enjoy spying the white birch trees.

Last night we fell asleep to the faint drone of snowmobiles over on the the trails. It was a great calm night for it but would have been cold. I imagine they would know to be well covered. And snowmobiles these days offer heated handles and seats, all sorts of stuff, not like when I drove one in the late seventies.

How did your last week and weekend go? We had a very long doctor's visit for Tony with much discussion about the failing strength in his legs. He has taken two ...

Why I Don't Mind Extreme Cold and Other Thoughts from Canadian Needle Nana

How are you...snowed in or sweltering in the summer heat?  The new year has started with wild and horrible weather around the globe. Heartbreaking to see devastation on such a scale in California. It makes us appreciate what is a normal winter so far here in the Ottawa valley. Wind chills of over -20 many days but you can have all the gear to layer up and keep warm on walks while out and about. I notice some folks have very fashionable, and what I would call, even beautiful winter outer wear. Mine tends to be more utilitarian and ...

Butterfly Freebies, Blooms and Bramble Blooms II, Slow Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

Young robin, pond bathing...

The garden has become overgrown and I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to keep up. Who knew rain and heat interspersed with sun were the perfect combination for plant growth, :). Look how everything is spilling onto the front steps. Usually this is a late August look.
I'd planted many Day Lilies to line the beds on either side. I chose the brightest red/rust colours to contrast with the white Hydrangeas that usually steal the show. The Day Lilies are being smothered by all the other growth this year. Here is an inadvertent movie I ...

Cardinal Rule, Tilda Orange Peels, Cakes, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

Thanks for the lovely comments about my veranda views. I miss Newfoundland very much but I certainly can't complain about where I'm living these days. It is beautiful and I enjoy all the critters so much too. Of course, those photos don't show the mosquitoes or the heat. However, no sun this morning; it is rather gloomy with promised thunder and lightening today.  So it goes.

Our busy week is over that included two medical appointments for Tony. And we did take Ned to the vet and now he is on two drugs and has a special ...

Chookshed Stitchers Challenge- Cardinal Rule, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

The resident mallard on our pond is sleeping there overnight. If up and down there early enough, I see him always resting in the same spot.  I took this shot from a great distance but even then he alerted. Every year the ducks try to nest there and we find the egg shells strewn about. I've tried to work out how the legs are folded here. ? Mallards are part of the Dabbling Ducks family which I'd never thought was a real scientific name till I looked into how they spend their nights.

What shade of yellow would you ...

Chookshed Stitchers Challenge, Bramble Blooms, Free Redwork Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

I'm amused watching this small turkey flock trot through the front yard. The male is displaying constantly and looking so special.

But as far as we can tell, the females don't even give him a glance. In fact, one day they all left and trotted off leaving him standing there alone. We felt a little sorry for him.
What a great gift! My sister always hits the mark with the books she gives me.
I've enjoyed reading it very much and just love the collection of over 50 easy and healthy recipes Helen has included with her ...

Hourglass Blocks, Free Patterns, Berry Scones from Canadian Needle Nana

The garden and land is getting a summer look with so much green grass and sprouting leaves everywhere. No matter the season or weather my morning routine is exactly the same... get up and get out.

I take Ned out for a big walkabout first thing. How tall our trees are!
Then back home where he gets fed and I get a coffee. Then I usually get my laptop out and work a little on my blog or photos or emails. What about you? Do you have a morning routine? This was our latest Prompt from LeeAnna at Not Afraid ...

Thrifted Bargains, Tiny 9 Patches, Knitting Moss Stitch from Canadian Needle Nana

Ned's big brother is staying with us for a little while. Here he's having a chat with Tony. Petey is demonstrating his signature move...how he can balance and beg at the same time. Definitely treat worthy, he insists.

During this week, I've been tv stitching. So enjoy making these tiny EPP blocks.
I found another YouTube stitcher to watch who enjoys both cross stitch and quilting. Laura at LalaDee Stitches. She has a great upbeat vibe and shares much enthusiasm for each of her many projects. She does beautiful work in both cross stitching and quilting ...
